Nevada Cancer Institute Announces Start Of Year-Long
Free Community Lecture Series
Lectures for community members, patients fighting the disease, cancer survivors and their families
Las Vegas
, March 6, 2009 - Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) will present a FREE series of educational lectures open to the community for those interested in learning more about cancer, prevention, detection and survivorship issues.
The series will begin Friday, March 13, 2009, from noon to 1 pm with Dr. Nicholas J. Vogelzang, one of
America
’s Top Doctors and NVCI’s associate center director for Clinical Research and head of the Genitourinary Cancer Program.
Dr. Vogelzang will speak about “Reducing Cancer Death Rates” from his perspective after 30 years in oncology.Dr. Vogelzang’s medical interests are in clinical trials for genitourinary malignancies and mesothelioma. He is a recognized expert in new therapies for patients with metastatic kidney cancer, including genetic therapy, new cytokine therapy and combination cytokine therapy.
In addition to Dr. Vogelzang’s lecture, there will be six more throughout the year.
On Wednesday, April 8, Dr. Wolfram Samlowski will be presenting an “Update on Melanoma.” Dr. Samlowski, head of the Section of Melanoma, Renal Cancer and Immunotherapy, specializes in the treatment of melanoma and kidney cancer with emphasis on treatments that activate the immune system to fight these cancers at NVCI.
On Wednesday, June 24, Dr. Karen Milligan will present “Survivorship: Making It Through the Cancer Journey.” Dr. Milligan is a dedicated member of the breast cancer oncology team at NVCI and is head of NVCI’s Survivorship Clinic.
Dr. Kenneth A. Foon will be presenting “Leukemia & Lymphoma” on Friday, August 21. Dr. Foon, head of the leukemia section and acting director of the Phase I Clinical Trials Program, has focused his career on immunologic/biologic approaches to cancer therapy, predominantly leukemia and lymphoma.
Wednesday, September 30 medical oncologist and researcher Dr. Oscar B. Goodman will be presenting a lecture entitled, “Towards the eradication of prostate cancer: A 2009 update and a look ahead.” Dr. Goodman, assistant member, Department of Clinical Oncology, sees patients at NVCI with genitourinary cancers, such as prostate and bladder.
Dr. Phillip J. Manno speaking on “Surviving Breast Cancer” on Friday, October 16. A respected long-time member of the

clinical community, Dr. Manno serves as chief of Clinical Oncology and Hematology Services at Nevada Cancer Institute.
Dr. Lin-Chi Chen will close the lecture series on Wednesday, November 18 with a lecture titled “Advances in Lung Cancer Treatment.” Dr. Chen, medical oncologist, specializes in thoracic oncology, participating in designing and conducting clinical trials studying novel agents in lung cancer.
